Law Enforcement Fitness Test Standards
The events and minimum scores for the physical fitness tests used by popular police, state trooper, sheriff and federal agencies, taken from each agency's published standards. A failed fitness test can end an application just like a failed written exam, so start training as soon as you apply.

City & County Police
NYPD: Job Standard Test (JST)
One continuous course, completed in 4 minutes 28 seconds or less while wearing a 14-lb weighted vest. The clock keeps running if you rest.
- Sprint 50 ft and climb a 6-ft barrier (3 attempts)
- Stair climb: 3 trips up and back
- Physical restraint simulation (push and pull a weighted handle)
- Pursuit run of about 600 ft around cones
- Victim rescue: drag a 176-lb mannequin 35 ft
- Trigger pull: 16 pulls with the strong hand, 15 with the other
NYPD dropped its timed 1.5-mile run for candidates in 2023, leaving the JST as the physical test you must pass.
LAPD: Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
- Sit-ups: as many as possible in 1 minute
- 300-meter sprint
- Push-ups: as many as possible in 1 minute
- 1.5-mile run
You must attempt all four events, and the passing score is 70%. LAPD doesn't publish a minimum for each event. The PAT is a half-day session in Los Angeles, scheduled after you pass the written test, and the Academy gives its first fitness test in week one.
LA County Sheriff: Validated Physical Ability Test
- Push-ups in 1 minute (chest touches a 1-liter bottle)
- 75-yard run with turns and curb-like obstacles
- Sit-ups in 1 minute
- 20-meter shuttle run (beep test)
There's no minimum for any single event. Your four scores are added up for one pass/fail result, so a strong event can make up for a weaker one. You must pass before you can enter the Academy. Call 1-800-A-DEPUTY with scoring questions.
Dallas Police: Pre-Academy Fitness Testing
- Timed runs
- Weightlifting
- Sit-ups
- Push-ups
Held at Dallas PD headquarters about twice a month before candidates enter the 10-month Academy. DPD doesn't publish minimum scores online, so ask a DPD recruiter for the current standards.
State Police & Highway Patrol
California Highway Patrol (CHP): Physical Abilities Test
| Event | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Sit-ups | 25 in 1 minute |
| Push-ups | 19 in 1 minute |
| 1.5-mile run | 15:00 or faster |
| 300-meter run | 70 seconds or faster |
You must meet every minimum within the time limit. Failing any event ends your application for that exam cycle, but you can reapply in the next one.
New York State Trooper: Physical Ability Test
| Age | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Sit-ups (1 minute) | ||
| 20–29 | 40 | 35 |
| 30–39 | 36 | 27 |
| 40–49 | 31 | 22 |
| Push-ups | ||
| 20–29 | 33 | 18 |
| 30–39 | 27 | 14 |
| 40–49 | 21 | 11 |
| 1.5-mile run | ||
| 20–29 | 11:58 | 14:07 |
| 30–39 | 12:25 | 14:34 |
| 40–49 | 13:11 | 15:24 |
These are the hiring minimums. The standards to graduate from the Academy are higher, so train past them.
Pennsylvania State Police: Cadet Physical Readiness Test
| Group | 300 m run | Push-ups (no time limit) | 1.5-mile run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men 20–29 | 62.1 sec | 26 | 13:16 |
| Men 30–39 | 63 sec | 20 | 13:46 |
| Women 20–29 | 75 sec | 13 | 15:52 |
| Women 30–39 | 82 sec | 9 | 16:38 |
The same test is given at application and again when you report to the Academy; failing any event disqualifies you. The graduation test is harder and the same for everyone, including a 1.5-mile run of 14:50.
Texas DPS Trooper: Physical Readiness Test
- 1.5-mile run
- 4-minute row
You need a combined score of at least 55% across the two events. Scoring charts for men and women are on the DPS site.
You take the test during the application, where your score also counts toward your ranking, and again on day one of recruit school. Failing on day one cancels your job offer. Command presence standards (waist, height/weight or body fat) also apply.
New Jersey: Police Training Commission Pre-Academy Standard
| Event | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Vertical jump | 15 inches (best of 3) |
| Sit-ups | 28 in 1 minute |
| 300-meter run | 70.1 seconds or faster |
| Push-ups | 24 in 1 minute |
| 1.5-mile run | 15:55 or faster |
The Police Training Commission's fitness standard for NJ police trainees. Your hiring agency and academy will tell you when you're tested.
Federal Agencies
FBI Special Agent: Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
- Pull-ups
- 300-meter sprint
- Push-ups
- 1.5-mile run
The events are done in this order with limited rest in between. You need a qualifying total score and the minimum in each event. You get three attempts to pass after the Meet and Greet.
The PFT now uses pull-ups instead of sit-ups, so older guides online are out of date. The FBI's official page doesn't list the scoring tables; use the FBI FitTest app and the PFT self-evaluation to prepare.
DEA Special Agent: Physical Task Assessment (PTA)
- Sit-ups: 1 minute
- 300-meter sprint
- Push-ups: untimed, continuous
- 1.5-mile run
Each event is scored 0–10. To pass you need at least 12 points total and at least 1 point in every event. Scoring differs for men and women but not by age.
The PTA is the first assessment in the DEA hiring process, and you need to pass it again before the DEA Academy. You only move on to the written assessment after passing it.
ATF Special Agent: Physical Task Test
| Age | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Sit-ups (1 minute) | ||
| 21–29 | 40 | 35 |
| 30–39 | 36 | 27 |
| 40+ | 31 | 22 |
| Push-ups (1 minute) | ||
| 21–29 | 33 | 16 |
| 30–39 | 27 | 14 |
| 40+ | 21 | 11 |
| 1.5-mile run | ||
| 21–29 | 12:18 | 14:55 |
| 30–39 | 12:51 | 15:26 |
| 40+ | 13:53 | 16:27 |
Missing the minimum on any event removes you from the hiring process, and ATF does not offer a retake.
Secret Service: Applicant Physical Abilities Test (APAT)
| Event | Needed for 1 point |
|---|---|
| Push-ups (1 minute) | 15 |
| Sit-ups (1 minute) | 23 |
| Illinois agility run | Under 23.89 sec (best of 2) |
| 1.5-mile run | Under 19:41 |
Each event is scored 0–8. You need at least 20 points total with no event at zero, so you need an average of 5 points per event, such as 27 push-ups or a 14:42 1.5-mile run.
Border Patrol Agent: Pre-Employment Fitness Test (PFT-1)
| Event | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Sit-ups | 25 in 60 seconds |
| Push-ups | 20 in 60 seconds |
| Step test | 5 minutes on a 14-inch step at 120 beats per minute |
On the step test, you fail if you're off the beat 3 times in a row, miss 6 steps in total, push on your legs with your hands, or stop.
CBP Officer: Fitness Tests
CBP Officer candidates must pass two fitness tests: a Pre-Employment Fitness Test (PFT) during hiring, and the Fitness Graduation Standard at the Academy:
| Academy graduation event | Minimum |
|---|---|
| 220-yard run | 45.0 seconds or faster |
| Push-ups | 24 in 60 seconds |
| 1.5-mile run | 15:00 or faster |
CBP's older guides describe different pre-employment tests, so confirm the current PFT events with CBP when you're invited.
How to Prepare
- Train the exact events. Practice push-ups, sit-ups and runs the way your agency counts them; a rep with bad form doesn't count on test day.
- Aim well above the minimum. Nerves, weather and an unfamiliar track all cost you on test day. Points-based tests (FBI, DEA, Secret Service) also need more than the bare minimum in each event to reach the passing total.
- Test yourself every few weeks. Run a full timed practice test in the official order, with the official rest breaks, so you know where you stand.
- Plan for the Academy too. Several agencies test again on day one or set higher standards to graduate.
- Check with your doctor before starting a new training program.
Fitness test on track? Make sure you pass the written exam too, and know when your agency is testing.
Standards are taken from each agency's published materials and checked regularly, but agencies can change their tests at any time. Always confirm the current standards with the agency or your recruiter before you test. SgtGodoy.com is not affiliated with any agency listed.
